Completely updated edition of James F. Haggerty's landmark litigation communications book will examine how media, social media and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping legal and crisis communications
NEW YORK, Nov. 4, 2026 — PRCG | Haggerty LLC, a leading strategic communications firm specializing in litigation communications, crisis communications and reputation management, is pleased to announce that 2028 will see the publication of a completely updated, 25th anniversary edition of CEO James F. Haggerty's landmark book In the Court of Public Opinion: Winning Strategies for Litigation Communications.
In the Court of Public Opinion, currently in its Third Edition, will once again be published by independent publisher Hart + Harvest Press. Among the updates, the new edition will feature critical analysis of the way changes in media, social media, search engine optimization (SEO) and artificial intelligence (AI) have affected litigation communications, crisis communications and the mitigation of reputational risk in an age where what happens outside the courtroom is often as important as what happens inside.
First published by John Wiley & Sons in 2003, In the Court of Public Opinion was the first book of its kind: a practical guide to the intersection of law, media and public perception in an era of 24-hour news, the internet and televised trials. Subsequent editions were published by ABA Publishing in 2009 and 2019, with the Third Edition published by Hart + Harvest Press in 2022.
Haggerty wrote the first edition when he was in his early 30s, but many of his insights have become even more prominent in the years since — particularly the notion that it is a lawyer's duty to ensure the public aspects of a case are being handled with the same seriousness and care as every other aspect, and that attorneys should have skilled litigation communications advisors at their side in a world increasingly awash in media.
Financial Times has called In the Court of Public Opinion "the perfect handbook for this age of show trials," and the book has been featured in media around the world, including The Wall Street Journal, CNN, CNBC, Inc., The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the ABA Journal, the National Law Journal, The American Lawyer, the New York Law Journal and many more. It has been cited in court opinions, textbooks and law review articles and used in university and law school classrooms. In 2025, a Korean edition was published, receiving wide attention in that market.
Haggerty, an attorney admitted in New York and Florida, has been a strategic communications consultant for more than 30 years. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he teaches a course entitled "Advocacy in the Court of Public Opinion."
Over the years, PRCG | Haggerty has been involved in some of the largest cases of their kind, including: one of the largest international fraud cases in history; some of the largest antitrust, employment, intellectual property and products liability cases; the largest single-family Holocaust restitution claim; and the largest class action lawsuit ever filed against the United States government. Through PRCG's sports brand, PRCG |Sports, the firm has also been involved in major NIL cases, NCAA investigations and many other sensitive reputational matters.
CEO James F. Haggerty is one of the few people to have been named to Chambers & Partners' annual ranking of top U.S. litigation communications consultants in every year of the list's existence. The rankings have noted that Haggerty is "a powerhouse" and "the consummate professional" with "a great depth of understanding in litigation and legal matters." As described in the annual Chambers guides, PRCG is known for its "tailored counsel and bespoke PR responses" to sensitive communications issues. Over the years, the firm has also been lauded in the guide for the "enormous care, attention and passion" it brings to each of its assignments, as well as for the creation of "remarkable content" in support of litigation and crisis communications issues.
In 2023 Haggerty was named by Business Insider as one of "18 top public-relations experts CEOs scramble to hire in a crisis." In 2017, he was honored by PR News as one of its "50 Game-Changers of PR" for his landmark work as "a trailblazer of litigation PR."
